Freesat Receivers Switching To HbbTV

Add Your Comment

Freesat is planning a new evolution of receivers that run on the HbbTV platform, in a project codenamed ‘G2’.

HbbTV is the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV standard first demonstrated in France in 2009.

Similar to the delayed YouView, the technology combines broadcast and internet based services to provide a more rounded entertainment package. Both offer features such as video on demand (VoD), catch -up TV, digital text and programming guides (EPG) and more two way interactivity with broadcasts such as the ‘Red Button’.

We’re apparently in store for some sensible multi-room features too:-

A senior source familiar with the project told Broadband TV News that the Freesat G2 receivers would embrace the multiscreen concept and allow for viewing around the home, rather than tying viewers to a single satellite receiver.

No release date has as yet been set for the Freesat G2 receivers.
