YouView Gets BBC Trust Approval

YouView No Comments »

Project Canvas (YouView) now has approval from the BBC Trust. This clears the final existing hurdle from the path of a YouView launch. Sky and Virgin will most likely continue to try and delay the much anticipated free video on demand service.

The BBC Trust did request that technical specifications for the platform be provided within 20 days, and that final core specs for the receiver boxes must be published no later than 8 months before launch. That means we are still at least 8 months away - which seems in line with the current target date of April 2011.

BBC trustee Diane Coyle said "The BBC Trust has concluded that Project Canvas will deliver significant public value for licence fee payers ... giving access to a wide range of on-demand content including BBC iPlayer, free of charge, through their TV sets".

Sky Sports News To Leave Freesat

Free To Air, Freesat 2 Comments »

Sky has revealed plans to remove Sky Sports News from both Freeview and Freesat. The channel will be replaced instead by Sky 3+1 (the 1 hour delayed version of Sky 3).

Whilst Freesat sports fans will not appreciate the move, Sky says this is being done in preperation to convert the channel to subscription only so it can then be upgraded to HD. Which isn't much comfort for those who have been watching it on free to air for the last 8 years. Perhaps Sky hasn't thought of just leaving an standard definition version on Freesat and Freeview...

The date of the withdrawal is yet to be announced, instead Sky are just sating 'later this year'.

Humax Says 15 Years For 3D TV At Home

3D TV No Comments »

Chief Technologist at Humax, Bob Hannent, says it's going to be 15-20 years for 3D TV to become mainstream.

He's right of course.

You may be able to walk into a shop today and actually buy 3D kit. But only the die hard technology geeks are going to part with extra cash for 3D features. And we're not talking just 'add-on' cash, because you can't just add 3D to your existing home cinema. We're talking replacement TV and DVD player, both at a premium 3D prices.

And as Humax Bob put it "Do people really care about 3D TV?"

But in time when 3D is just a small bullet point on the side of all HDTV boxes, you might find yourself watching the odd 3D broadcast without ever intending to buy into it.
