YouView Get Ofcom Approval

Virgin and Sky protested over YouView, as did 10 other parties. The concerns were varied from restricting competition to technical standards not being openly developed.

But Ofcom brushed them aside saying it would be far too early to open any kind of investigation as YouView was operating in a new market, and it would be some time before any impact could be possibly be determined.

Ofcom said:

It is likely that YouView will bring benefits to viewers and consumers. Any potential harm to competition would need to be offset against these benefits.

In other words, if your paid services are so good surely there is no need to worry about competition.

The YouView Chief Exec said:

In a market dominated by pay services, we are creating the only mass-market IPTV service that will be subscription-free.

We look forward to seeing the package YouView launches with next year. And in particular how this will impact fees and packages offered by Sky and Virgin.
