YouView Gets BBC Trust Approval

Project Canvas (YouView) now has approval from the BBC Trust. This clears the final existing hurdle from the path of a YouView launch. Sky and Virgin will most likely continue to try and delay the much anticipated free video on demand service.
The BBC Trust did request that technical specifications for the platform be provided within 20 days, and that final core specs for the receiver boxes must be published no later than 8 months before launch. That means we are still at least 8 months away – which seems in line with the current target date of April 2011.
BBC trustee Diane Coyle said “The BBC Trust has concluded that Project Canvas will deliver significant public value for licence fee payers … giving access to a wide range of on-demand content including BBC iPlayer, free of charge, through their TV sets”.
